VANCOUVER, B.C., July 17, 2008 – Xantrex Technology Inc. (TSX:XTX), the North American market leader for solar inverters, supplied 10 three-phase 225 kilowatt (kW) inverters for the new solar installation at Fresno Yosemite International Airport, dedicated this month in Fresno, California. The photovoltaic (PV) system installed at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport is the largest solar electric project at any airport in the United States.
The Xantrex products used in the installation were selected by WorldWater & Solar Technologies Corp. (WorldWater), a leading solar system integrator. WorldWater performed the overall design and engineering for the project, and installed the inverters as part of an agreement with Xantrex. The 10 Xantrex units convert the raw direct current (DC) energy collected by the solar panels into high-quality alternating current (AC) power for use at the airport.
The state-of-the-art solar system, which tracks the sun, will reduce electrical costs and reduce emissions from fossil fuel electricity generation. The 2 megawatt (MW) system is expected to eventually provide up to 40% of the airport's annual power consumption needs. In total, the airport is projected to save nearly US$13 million in energy costs over 20 years.
“The reliability and high efficiency of Xantrex inverters make them well-suited for these types of large commercial applications,” says Xantrex CEO John Wallace. “Xantrex is a prominent player in the North American commercial solar market, and we are proud to be involved in this project with WorldWater to provide cost effective, clean, renewable solar power to the busy Fresno Yosemite International Airport.”
"We were delighted to work with Xantrex on this project, and we incorporated Xantrex products exclusively into this large solar energy system,” says Dr. Frank Smith, CEO of WorldWater. “The installation at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport is a step forward in promoting solar power and shows what an integrated system is capable of achieving, by significantly reducing electricity costs and improving air quality at the airport."
