Xantrex inverter controls solar system at legendary German sport cycling track
(Download PDF version)

Vancouver, B.C., February 6, 2007 – Xantrex Technology Inc. (TSX:XTX) has supplied German energy company, EnBW Regional AG with a solar grid-tie inverter for a 481 kilowatt peak (kWp) installation at a renowned sport cycling track in Germany, recently outfitted with solar power.

Located in Im Oberen Gaeu, Germany, the RSV Oeschelbronn cycling racetrack is steeped in tradition and is currently undergoing significant renovation and modernization. The rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system, controlled by a single Xantrex GT500E commercial grid-tie solar inverter, is one of EnBW Regional AG’s largest solar power systems to be connected to the grid in the state of Baden-Württemberg. At 8,000 square metres, the solar array is as large as a soccer field.

Xantrex received this order through Relatio Innovative Concepts and the system was installed in December 2006.  At 500 kilowatts (kW), the GT500E is the largest inverter made by Xantrex and efficiently converts the direct current (DC) electricity generated by the solar modules into high quality alternating current (AC) electricity.

The solar array consists of 2,600 Sharp solar modules at 185 watts each. 2,500 of these modules are located on the roof of the cycling sports arena, with 100 modules on the roof of the sports association centre.

The system will generate 481 kWp, or an estimated 435,000 kWh, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 125 average households. Excess power produced will be sold back to EnBW’s utility grid. By utilizing renewable solar energy, the project is expected to reduce the building’s carbon dioxide emissions by 285 tons annually.

"We are pleased that the Xantrex GT500E was selected for the modernization of this incredible facility", said John Wallace, Xantrex CEO. "This installation is another example of Xantrex innovation providing industry-leading solutions for the European solar market."

Tim Morath, Project Manager at EnBW, said, “Xantrex products were chosen because they offer a tailored, integrated concept for PV installations, and first-class customer support.”

Xantrex solar inverters offer high quality, performance, reliability, value, ease of installation, and high power density; making them the preferred choice for an increasing number of renewable energy installers and their customers in Europe.
