Green goes mainstream with Xantrex PowerHub
VANCOUVER, B.C., August 16, 2006 – Xantrex Technology Inc. (TSX:XTX) introduces the PowerHub 1800, an innovative rechargeable backup power system that collects and stores energy from the electrical grid and a range of renewable sources including solar panels and small wind turbines. The PowerHub can store enough power to support the energy needs of the average household without the need to continuously run a noisy fossil fuel based generator.
Xantrex leveraged its extensive expertise in the design and manufacture of renewable power conversion equipment to create this ground breaking new product. The PowerHub allows home owners to install a regulatory approved renewable energy solution without requiring a licensed electrician to do the installation. The PowerHub’s ability to be recharged by renewable energy sources makes it particularly useful for the growing number of residences and vacation homes that are not connected to the electricity grid or where the grid is not reliable. The PowerHub can also be recharged through a standard electrical outlet connected to a generator or the grid, providing easy backup power to grid tied homes as well.
“Interest in renewable energy has never been greater, and consumers are looking for simple, affordable ways to integrate renewable energy into their lives,” said John Wallace, Xantrex CEO. “The introduction of the PowerHub renewable energy system gives conscientious consumers a do-it-yourself solution to meet their backup power needs.”
By making residential renewable energy accessible and easy to use, the PowerHub also addresses the concerns of a growing number of global consumers who factor products’ environmental impact into their purchase decisions. Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) describes a US $540 billion global marketplace of environmentally conscious consumers. Approximately 30 percent of American adults, or 50 million people, are currently considered LOHAS consumers, according to the Web site www.lohas.com.
The Xantrex PowerHub provides 1800 watts of continuous power through four external AC outlets, and the unit’s display panel indicates the remaining charge. Users can connect the PowerHub to solar panels or small wind turbines, or simply plug it into a wall outlet, to keep it charged for an emergency. In the event of a power outage, an integrated transfer switch automatically kicks-in, providing backup power to connected loads such as a TV, light, refrigerator/freezer and other electrical and electronic appliances. Unlike gas-powered generators, the PowerHub 1800 is quiet and safe for indoor use.
Pricing and Availability The PowerHub 1800 is currently available for purchase in Canada and can be found at select Canadian Tire retail stores or www.canadiantire.ca. The suggested retail price is CDN $899. A U.S. market launch is targeted for 2007.
